Welcome to EDCI 402

We have started our EDCI 402 - Reading: Instructional Principles and Strategies course for the Spring 2021 semester! Our teaching program is located within the traditional territory of the Ktunaxa Nation. We started our course off by reading the book, Shi-shi-etko by Interior Salish and Métis author, Nicola I. Campbell. Next, during our introductions, we shared a piece of nature that is meaningful to each of us through an item from nature or a photograph.

During our first week we started building a classroom community by engaging in a collaborative project to create a nature alphabet. Had we been in a classroom setting we would have physically built the alphabet to hang in our room for our time together. Here is a look at a compilation of each student creating a letter in their natural environment.

In our Discussion Forums this week students added in some thoughts about what they hope to learn during this course. These important topics and themes were put into a Wordle:

Here is a look at my setup to instruct our course this year: laptop ready for Zoom (live video meeting) and Brightspace (course website platform); cell phone connected to light ring for good lighting and the ability to act like a document camera; picture books, text books, and more books; and manipulatives from our course kit!
